It is obvious that when it comes to the screw-on modifications for your import car, turbocharging is by far the best for your money. But what’s with the charge of your import? Like turbochargers, compressors produce boost, but instead driven by exhaust gases alone, they are driven by a belt pulley on the crankshaft, which means that they contribute to parasitic power loss when the engine is not increasing in. In addition, there are not nearly as many charging kits designed for the import, there are turbo kits. So while yes, supercharging add only as much energy as turbochargers, turbocharging is much more common in the import car community. This popularity leads to a wealth of good, sound online information and advice on the turbocharger, that is, if you have a question, it’s probably already been answered in a number of online automotive forum. You need only to look and be patient!

Turbocharging an engine which was not designed for forced induction, is not for the fainthearted, nor mechanically-disinclined. It is a move very dedicated, expensive, time consuming and headache-project. But in the end when you finally treated to the visceral rush into the seat of your car again find that min through a turbocharger spins at 120,000 rpm, howling an intoxicating jetlike song, you know immediately that it was all very worthwhile themselves. But before you go out with the final apparently impressive results for a successful turbo installation, you should know what it is you’re getting into, and how much money you are looking for. The importance of thoroughly researching this project are not overvalued at first. The more one reads, the better prepared you will be and the less likely you are scolded, that overlooked a seemingly insignificant, but oh-so-important component that you can. They also have a much better understanding of how a turbocharger works and how to troubleshoot potential problems. You can start your search here.

The following is a bare-minimum list of parts for custom low-boost turbo installation is required, regardless of the car. (Each part will be discussed in detail in coming articles, so stay tuned!)

* These prices are rough estimates for retail sale, new items

*- turbo (duh!): $ 500 – $ 700-
turbo manifold:. $ 300 – $ 1000
turbo inlet pipes (steel): $ 25-
blow-off valve or bypass valve: $ 150
air filter: $ 40-
pipe: $ 150-
oil drain line, weld-in bung, Furniture: $ 40 —
Oil supply line and Furniture: $ 40-
Silicone various couplings: Around 8-10 $
100-quality stainless steel hose clamps, preferably t-bolt clamps: $ 83-
air-air intercooler: $ 230-
intercooler pipes (regular steel) : $ 75-
Intercooler piping (Aluminum): $ 150-
fuel management piggyback air / fuel controller: $ 400
GReddy E-Manage Apexi AFC Neo Fuel Management retuned ECU: $ 600-
fuel-management-full standalone $ 1500
AEM EMS larger injectors (using re – tuned ECU or stand-alone): $ 260-
fuel-rail, if with different style injectors: $ 150. 0-
vacuum hose clamp different diameter: $ 20
gaskets for turbo manifold, downpipe, etc: $ 20
hardware and other equipment: $ 20
Part that you buy when you should have all concerned with longevity of your engine: -complete clutch kit

Once your car with a turbocharger, you will make much more power, couplings and bearings, especially if they have high mileage, slipping a hard time dealing with the sharp increase in torque without. It would be a shame to see with the whole turbo project only that you can not transfer this magnificent power to do on the floor! Advanced Clutch Technology provides reliable, affordable clutches.

Oil Cooler: turbo is extremely hot, so the oil runs out of the engine in the turbo on the supply line is very hot after it is cooled by the turbo, the turbo, and drains back into the sump. If you can afford it, an oil cooler is a great investment, even if the car is not as charged. Get in with a thermostat to prevent the at between 180-190 degrees, because as bad as cold oil is very hot oil! Boost Gauge: A very good idea to catastrophic engine failure due to too much lift, you can also know whether there are any vacuum leaks anywhere in the turbo system. Heat shield and / or turbo-Ceiling: A heat shield is a barrier between the sizzling hot-turbo engine and major components that should not be called to act as the electrical connections and power steering fluid. A turbo blanket, just like it sounds, will dramatically reduce under hood temperatures and are thus the temperature of the air taken in by the turbo. A blanket has the added advantage of a faster spool-up time because of the heat (energy) is captured inside the turbo. Fuel pump: Usually in low-boost applications, the car OEM pump enough if you plan on promoting significantly more than 8 bar, a fuel pump, as is the Walbro 255LPH necessary. Wideband oxygen sensor and air / fuel ratio measure, $ 279 (sensor only): Wideband lambda sensors measure the ratio of air to fuel enters the engine at any given time. You can buy just the sensor and display to your laptop to the relationship, or you can purchase a lesson, so you always know what is breathing your precious engine. This is an extremely valuable tool for tuning a turbo car. So the total cost for assembling your own turbo kit and turbo charging your car is $ 2603rd (To get to this sum, was the turbo manifold $ 300, the fuel was $ 400, and the intercooler piping was clear, steel). Compare that with the price of the Turbo Kit GReddy’s that cost 3699 $ (for a Nissan 240SX). Of course, buying a bolt on kit is much more convenient than buying each part from its own site, and you’re pretty much guaranteed that everything fit perfectly and that you will not forget anything. But if you’re on a budget, you can enjoy the «Options» and / or if you are the way things his way (what love is much more satisfying!), You can save $ 1000 + by assembling your own custom kit . You can even more if you buy used parts via online forums or eBay Auto saved, but keep from buying a used turbo if you can physically inspect, for not more than they need to be re-established. Stay tuned for the next article on choosing the right size turbo!

We havent posted in a while, its been very busy over here. I wanted to take sometime to give an update our shop car and the goals for the car. For next year we plan on doing less drag racing and focusing more on SCCA/Road Racing. Primarly Watkins Glen and other tracks in the North East.

First we are starting with brake and suspension upgrades. Look for future updates on what we are doing.

We are also designing a new turbo kit specifically for the track and street, Watkins Glen is where it will get tested and perfected.

Also through the winter we are going to be working on our new intake manifold which will be available probably in spring. After we put it through extensive testing on the track. This will be fully built in house by Tim, which if you have seen his work it speaks for itself. Be looking for this new item in Spring.

Quik over at Tremek has started a build thread on his Turbo Camaro. See below:

Well here is the run down of the project. driveline is a 02 4.8 [293ci motor] PTe88 turbo, Viper spec’d T56, 230/236 cam, ls2 intake, 241 heads. this exact setup made 702 rwhp and 565rwtq in my silverado with pig rich AFR of 10.4. Since the camaro is about 1k pounds lighter then the silverado i was curious to see how the setup would preform in a lighter chassis. I shift this setup at 7500 rpms but might bump that up a few hundred rpms. Car is going to have powersteering and all the bells and whistles, this isnt a track car just a street warrior that will see track times but again isnt a full out track setup. I know auto would be faster but isnt an option.

here are the mock up pics of setup. some of this kit is carried over from the silverado. also this will be exiting thru a CME but will use a cutout off the downpipe for track days

when fiinshed car wil lbe electron blue with white 35th aniversary stripes. wheels are OEM C6Z06 wheels with a **** harrel clone widebody kit. engine bay has been smoothed and filled. the holes created from turbo kit will be filled and smoothed once again. all wires are going to be tucked and hiddend under the chassis. this will be a drawnout project

well today i worked on my rad support so i could use stock rad and fans. i cut rad support like many do and the piece that was removed was skinned and overlapped over the remaining piece. goal was to remain as stock looking as possible and doing this i still have strenght of stock and lines of stock as well. I also drilled out the spot welds holding the lower rad support in place. im sliding this peice foward to allow myself to keep the same angle of stock rad/fan setup.

still up in air if i should triangluate the rad support for more strenght, ran short on time to finish more of it. Have to head to class

made some more progress today.

first up you can see how the rad is supported. i used 1×1 tube and cut it in half then i used stock rubber holders from the plastic rad cover and used them as the feet. I then had a cover break’d formed and also used a set of rubber holders on top

im going to build a air deflector to direct the air from nose of car down to lower part of the IC and one from nose to top of IC this way the air is directed into the IC only

you can see in the pics the stock lower air deflector is in place just moved forward and reangled and works more as a scope to help direct air into the rad

now you can see the pics of the fuel rails and regulator. I Had it this way wihen i twas in the silverado and works well in the camaro. its hidden which i like the plan for this build is to be as clean as possible and things hidden

2003 – 2006
LANCER EVOLUTION
EVOLUTION MR
EVOLUTION RS
EVOLUTION SE L4 2.0 T 4G63 GAS

Agency Power has finished testing on their all new Turbo Kit for the 2003 and up Mitsubishi EVO VIII, RS, and MR Edition vehicles. The AP turbo kit is designed to offer the consumer several different options for their vehicle needs. The kit is available with a T3/T4 50Trim Turbo for the daily drivers and road racers. As well, the kit is available with a 60-1 Turbo for the customer wanting to do big horsepower numbers in either drag racing or road racing scenarios.

What sets the Agency Power EVO VIII Turbo Kit aside from the competition is its quality, performance, and presentation that has been proven. Originally tested at the famous Willow Springs Raceway in the Vivid Racing EVO VIII, the prototype helped carry the VR EVO to fast lap times placing in the first Subaru, EVO, Mini shootout. With making full boost by 4000 rpm, the 50Trim kit was on its way to success.

Once the final production unit was finished, we took a stock EVO VIII and added some common parts to get our results. Without going over board to gain high numbers, we put together the car with some of the basic upgrades most people do. Products – B&B downpipe, B&B catpipe, JIC 505 catback Exhaust, Turbo XS UTEC, Perrin MBC, HKS 264 Intake and Exhaust camshafts, ARP Head Stud Bolts, Blitz 700cc Injectors, Agency Power Fuel Rail, and Walbro Fuel Pump.

With the new turbo kit installed, we took the EVO VIII to the local All Wheel Drive Dyno Jet facility. Dynoing the stock car at 220 wheel horsepower, we had a good baseline to tune upwards from. Since most vehicles run everyday on 91-octane pump gas, we tuned it with this gas first for a real life number. The 91-octane map at 1.5 bar (23lbs) of boost put down 330 wheel horsepower (429 Crank HP). Once drained, we filled the tank with 109 Unleaded VP Gas and turned up the boost with a retune. The EVO VIII now made 405 wheel horsepower (526.5 Crank HP) and 358.6 ft/lbs of wheel torque.

Now this is our smaller turbo option! With C16 leaded gasoline (most companies test with this), our 50 Trim kits will make close to 425 wheel horsepower safely on the EVO VIII stock engine. With our 60-1 Turbo Kit, you will achieve about 475 wheel horsepower (617.5 Crank HP).

Why is this kit better then the competition? Well first we give you the ability to switch turbos to your performance needs with nothing but the cost of the turbo. This allows you dial your car in for the type of use it is involved in. Second, all of our piping is T304 stainless steel with ? inch thick flanges. The superior staff at B&B Performance Exhaust assembles the piping, exclusively for Agency Power. Next, we supply high quality and durable SAMCO brand hose couplers. Available in Red, Blue, or Black. These 3 ply silicon hoses do not rip, wear, or fade. We also include stainless steel oil lines for the top and bottom of the turbo. Our bottom line includes screw on flanges for perfect fitment and no leaks. We use a Tial 38mm wastegate with a .7 spring for perfect response. Our custom designed intake tube with recirc fitment works in conjunction with the factory MAF. As well as we provide a short ram intake system that has a 3D machined housing to fit with the MAF and we use a K&N cone filter. The intake includes a bracket for firm fitment. Lastly we include all necessary vacuum lines, gaskets, hardware, clamps, and fittings to make this a true bolt on kit. What finally sets us apart from the competition is our presentation.
